Double-block Killara mansion finds buyer and $2 million profit

Jill Smith of Savills Gordon has listed the property which is one of three that form an enclave of modern case-study houses.

At 2 Maytone Avenue, the basic Miesian cube is extended with covered areas, emulating the Australian verandah.
The flowing open-plan living spaces, well-proportioned kitchen, and outlook from outdoor living areas are all important architectural details in this modern 1945 house.
The effect of the open-plan living area and the use of retractable screens and curtains create an interior space that is almost Japanese in its flexibility.  
Sydney Ancher’s fascination with Europe contributed to the introduction of European internationalism in Australia.
Along with Arthur Baldwinson, Robin Boyd, Sir Roy Grounds and Harry Seidler, Sydney Ancher pioneered modern domestic architecture in Australia. His houses of the late 1940s and 1950s became widely known and demonstrated to others the possibilities of a new approach to residential living.   
Neighbouring property, 3 Maytone Avenue, also designed by Sydney Ancher, won the Royal Australian Institute of Architects (NSW) Sulman Award in 1945 for its modern indoor-outdoor relationship, despite postwar restrictions and shortages, and in the face of obstructions from a conservative local council that required amendments to be made to some of his designs.

An early Federation Killara house has been sold for $5.26 million making it Sydney’s most expensive weekend auction sale.
The five-bedroom house sold at its reserve price, the North Shore Times revealed with the buyer, Seal Fan, an Australian-Chinese furniture designer from Chipping Norton, who will be moving in with his wife and three children.
Located at <a href="https://www.realestate.com.au/property-house-nsw-killara-125805670" target="_blank">4 Stanhope Road</a>, the 1657 sqm property provides a fusion of contemporary style and character elegance.
Built in 1890 the property was last sold in 2013 for $3.722 million, when bought by David Whiteing, Commonwealth Bank of Australia’s chief information officer, and his wife Penelope Graham, deputy chair of Sydney Motorway Corporation.
It sold in 2005 for $2.7 million, $2.4 million in 2004 and $1.56 million in 2000.
In 2007 the property was refurbished.
The property has a formal lounge and dining with original marble fireplaces with a casual dining with easy access to the outdoor.

Early Federation Killara house sold for $5.26 million

The Killara home of one of Australia’s most famous children’s authors, Ethel Turner, has been sold.
The 1 Werona Avenue property sold “in the mid-$5 millions”.
Woodlands was formerly known as Inglewood.
It was where Turner wrote Seven Little Australians, earning the property its State Heritage listing.
The vendors Peter and Carol Himmelhoch had invested time in consulting with the State Heritage Register and Ku-ring-gai Council about upgrading the heritage property.
“There’s no ghost in it, everyone asks me that question,” she told the local paper.

Killara family estate up for auction

A historical 1904 Killara trophy home has been sold for $5.45 million, the most expensive result across Sydney over the weekend.
Located at <a href="https://www.realestate.com.au/property-house-nsw-killara-124713770" target="_blank">66 Springdale Road,</a> the north facing Poitiers was marketed as an iconic Killara estate. 
The home has just hit the market with a price guide of $4.9 million to $5.3 million.
Sitting on 1,906 sqm with 35 metres frontage, it was once home to Bert Oldfield, the famous test cricketer.
Poitiers, at 66 Springdale Rd, was owned by Bert Oldfield and his wife Ruth for 47 years, before they sold it to the current owners John and Patricia Mortlock, the parents of former Australian Wallabies captain Stirling Mortlock. The Mortlock family purchased Poitiers from the Oldfield family in 1976 for $127,000. 
The Oldfields, who were the third owners of the home, bought it from Sydney socialite Paul Dekyvere in 1931.
Featuring timber joinery, ceilings and original fireplaces it also has a ballroom-sized formal lounge, music area and large formal dining.
The property has been improved over the years including a gourmet kitchen with stone and timber benchtops, appliances and an adjoining dining area along with an alfresco terrace that overlooks a 14 meter sandstone clad pool.

The former 4800-square-metre Killara estate of the long-time home of radio broadcaster Ron Casey has been listed for sale at $7.8 million.
Casey sold the five-bedroom residence with a swimming pool and tennis court in 1998 for $2.67 million to Yat Sun Chan and Daisy Shuk Han Leung, who owns the outdoor adventure gear company World United.
The Hong Kong-based owners, however, have reportedly left the property unoccupied for the past 10 years since they returned to China.

Killara couple Ken and Josie Demlakian, owners of engineering firm Demlakian Consulting, have finally sold the 1906 trophy home Ballernoo, after around 500 days on the market.
Holding their nerve secured an upper north shore record price, though perhaps short of their desired $13.5 million at an estimated $12 million.
<a href="https://www.realestate.com.au/property-house-nsw-killara-118584723" target="_blank">Ballernoo</a>, a grand Federation estate comes with a championship-sized floodlit tennis court, golf driving range and heated pool and cabana, set over 4500 sqm.
There's 1000 sqm of living areas along with the nine bedroom and seven bathrooms.
The property features a domed music conservatory, billiards and games room, theatre room, gymnasium, home office, children's playroom and dance floor loggia.
Nestled deep in the hedged garden, inspired by the garden of Versailles, is one bedroom self-contained guesthouse, which is the estate’s former horseman’s cottage. 
Ballernoo is expected to have set the joint upper north shore record which was firstly held by Australian Ilmenite Resources owner Jerry Ren, who paid $11.5 million for his Warrawee mansion in 2010.
This was matched in 2012 when technology investor Daniel Petre sold his Springdale Road property to Anita Cunliffe, wife of UBS heads of investment banking Guy Fowler.
Ken, who likes to chance his hand at the poker table from time to time, paid $3.4 million for the home in 1999.
The property was sold through Glenn Curran of Curran Property Chatswood who was seeking $13.5 million, with the international buyer introduced by the international buyers agent Robert Klaric.
The dress circle address, 26 Wattle Street, was once the home of Sydney Stock Exchange vice chairman Clarence Degenhardt in the 1930s.
Ballernoo is likely to have eclipsed the high of $11.5 million set in 2012 when technology investor Daniel Petre sold his Springdale Road property to Anita Cunliffe, wife of UBS head of investment banking Guy Fowler.
The record had stood with Bremon at Warrawee at $11.5 million since 2010.
