The Federal Opposition has demanded to be consulted ahead of any federal election in July on the appointment of the Reserve Bank governor.

It is speculated the deputy governor will succeed Glenn Stevens as the central bank's governor.

The Australian Financial Review says Treasurer Scott Morrison has declined to consult with the opposition on any promotion to governor of Reserve Bank of Australia deputy Philip Lowe, who has won Labor's backing.

Shadow treasurer Chris Bowen on Monday demanded the government stop naming senior Treasury portfolio positions without consulting the opposition, because he argued the government is now effectively on an election footing.
