A record $18.85 million has been paid for a house overlooking Wategos Beach at Byron Bay.
It’s the existing longtime record holder on the Marine Parade dress circle at the popular surfing location.
Property developer Danny Goldberg secured the sale in an offmarket deal with Sydney buyer Eli Havas, from the Sydney rag trading family, who bought without any registered mortgage.

It has been reported the purchase is associated with F45 gym entrepreneur Adam Gilchrist.
The former Ticor Developments director, Goldberg, who is now chairman of private equity firm, Dakota Capital, bought the home for a record $15.68 million some 13 years ago, reflecting slow annual 1.5 percent price growth.
The latest sale was almost double the highest sale during the interim — $9.5 million in 2015 about 10 houses along.
The home, set diagonally opposite popular Rae's restaurant, became known as Wategos House, a $31,000-a-week peak-season holiday rental.

The price didn’t knock Palm Beach off its mantle as priciest beach retreat location in NSW.

The six-bedroom beachfront sits on 1500 sqm, and its front terrace overlooks the beach with a custom-made table for 14. 
The $18.85 million confidence-boosting sale comes at a time when there is no shortage of stunning homes on and off the market available for buyers. Like the rest of the housing market downturn, prices in the upper end have been hit by around 12 per cent, according to CoreLogic.

Low price growth for record setting Wategos, Byron Bay trophy home

Love &amp; Hatred jewellery designer Giovanni D'Ercole has returned to Wategos Beach at Byron Bay.
The popular designer has paid $4.3 million to be back on the exclusive strip, having sold off it back in 2006 for the hinterland. 
He's recently secured a Christine Vadasz-redesigned 1960s timber-clad beach cottage, on an elevated 830 sqm parcel.
<a href="https://www.realestate.com.au/sold/property-house-nsw-byron+bay-125218070" target="_blank">The two bedroom home</a> sale was among the last secured through Nicolette van Wijngaarden at Unique Estates given the collapse of the boutique agency last month.
It comes with approval for construction of an expansive architectural home.
D'Ercole has been up in the Byron Bay hinterland in recent times after selling his earlier Wategos retreat for $3.14 million.
Last year he sold The River House at Coorabell to Melbourne based film makers Deborah Barlow and Martin McKenna for $3.7 million.

Sydney property developer and former BRW Rich Lister Phillip Wolanski has yet to sell his hillside Wategos Beach holiday rental property.
It failed to sell at auction last weekend.
The 10 Palm Valley Drive property was bought in 2007 for $3.4 million from Byron Bay Golf Club director Brian Corrigan. 
It was co-owned with stockbroker and developer Lance Rosenberg, who sold out his stake late last year for $1.1 million.
The three-level, four bedroom holiday home rents out for more than $5500 a week during peak season. It last came up for sale in 2012 with a $4.5 million asking price
There's approval for a grand home with a swimming pool.
