The longtime Balmain East home of the late Labor activist and environmentalist Tom Uren is for sale following his opera singer widow Christine Logan’s decision to downsize locally.
It was designed by architect Richard Leplastrier in the early 1990s using jarrah and karri recycled from warehouses in Fremantle, walls of blackbutt from northern New South Wales and ceilings of two-inch thick boards of celery top pine sold off by the Hydroelectric Commission in Tasmania.
The former minister in the Whitlam and Hawke Labor governments then created a private green oasis on the 496 sq m holding.
He paid $90,000 for a vacant block on <a href="https://www.modernhouse.co/listings/tom-uren-house/" target="_blank">Gilchrist Place</a> in 1983, then the adjoining property for $100,000 two years later.
Between $3.45 million and $3.795 million is the price guidance for the 287 sqm space by Marcus Lloyd-Jones, of the Modern House agency. 
"Taking its cue from the nearby industrial waterfront buildings, as well as from the character of Uren himself, there’s a solidity and robustness to the form of the three-bedroomed timber house, and yet it still manages to create an element of openness and intimacy," he said. 
Uren, who was born in Pashley Street, Balmain, died in early 2015.

There's a whiff of desperation from former Australian cricket captain Steve Smith with his vacant contemporary Balmain new-build investment.
The banned skipper, who is unavailable to play international and national cricket after his part in the ball-tampering scandal, initially sought tenants for the townhouse mid-last month.
This week Smith indicated his amplified keenness for some income.
The home initially came without any rental price indication, but is <a href="https://www.realestate.com.au/property-house-nsw-balmain+east-423357126" target="_blank">now advertised at $2,500 a week.</a>
But an e-mail from Cobden &amp; Hayson leasing agent Kate Ferrante to those who's previously enquired suggesting the landlord's desire to get it leased.

"The landlords have advised us to advertise the property with a weekly rental of $2500 and to advise that this can be negotiated.
Smith has been working on the home build for the past couple of years after spending $2 million on a cottage on nearly 200 sqm in 2015.
It was his first purchase on the Balmain peninsula, which was soon followed by a two bedroom townhouse then another knockdown rebuild in Birchgrove.
His total portfolio on the peninsula stands at over $4 million, not including his home in Coogee and another two investments, one in San Souci and the other in Marrickville.
Smith was one of the three banned in the ball tampering scandal which rocked world cricket.

Australian cricket captain Steve Smith is not leaving beachside Coogee.
His newly built Balmain East terrace is up for rent.
The world's best Test batsman had the option of heading to the Balmain peninsula, after buying three properties in as many years, but it will instead be keeping an eye on his $4 million portfolio from the east.
His Johnson Street knockdown rebuild replaced a cottage.

It is a charcoal-coloured two-storey modern home designed by architect firm Raymond Panetta Architects. 
The <a href="https://www.realestate.com.au/property-house-nsw-balmain+east-423357126" target="_blank">smart wired Balmain East property</a> has three bedrooms, three bathrooms and a landscaped garden.
The casual living area opens to a terrace with Harbour Bridge views.
Cobden &amp; Hayson agent Kate Ferrante isn't advertising a price, but industry insiders suggest a $2,000 plus a week rental.
It was Smith's first purchase on the peninsula, setting him back $2 million in 2015.

Smith continued his peninsula purchasing, next securing a Beattie Street townhouse that cost him $1,345,000 in 2016.
That's recently been up for rent at $895 a week, down a bit on the $975 a week he sought upon his purchase.
The two bedroom property sits in the converted Tin Sheds.
Last year he quietly paid $1.95 million for a dilapidated Birchgrove cottage through Cobden &amp; Hayson agent Danny Cobden.
The free-standing Victorian, marketed as a "vintage treasure ripe for reninvention", belonged to architect David Gole.
That's Smith's latest project, having recent approvals for the near 200 sqm parcel.
He's seeking to part demolish the existing dwelling, making alterations and additions to the ground floor and first floor.
There's also an application submitted to construct a new two storey dwelling on the newly created lot.
The estimated cost of the work is $900,000.
He retains his abode as apartment with ocean views in Coogee, which he bought in 2011 for $1.75 million.
His investment portfolio also includes a one bedroom plus study apartment in the Jameson complex in Sans Souci and a Marrickville apartment.
Smith is captaining Australia in the battle with South Africa, with the four match Test series tied at 1-1 after two games.
Property investment runs deep in the Australian team. His predecessor Michael Clarke was busy this week attending the launch of an off the plan Port Frederick development in which he has invested project funds.
Brett Hunter from Raine &amp; Horne Terrigal/Avoca Beach said the Viciniti was a boutique block of 24 apartments with prices from $420,000 to $1.4 million.
“The broad price range means that Viciniti will appeal to downsizers from the Central Coast, Sydney and Newcastle, investors and first home buyers,” said Hunter.

House Hunting website boss Drew Muirhead and his naturopath partner Linda Dal Molin are selling their Balmain East home.
The couple paid $2.1 million in 2016 when moving from Paddington where they flipped their two-bed terrace for $1.94 million, having paid $1.16 million for the property two years earlier.
The couple has renovated the Balmain townhouse with three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a galley kitchen and courtyard.
It has a $2.45-$2.69 million price guide.

House Hunting chief Drew Muirhead lists Balmain East home

The Balmain East home of Jo Devery, the chief operating officer of Winning Appliances, has been listed for December 7 auction.
The three-storey harbourfront comes with a 9.5 metre jetty, mooring pen and a pool on its 470 square metre holding.
The northerly aspect over Mort Bay can be viewed from throughout the five-bedroom Nicholson Street house.
The offering through Matthew Hayson and Rita Lopresti at Cobden &amp; Hayson includes a studio.
The 1980s designed home has seen its three bathrooms refreshed in recent times.
The listing comes as the family seek to be closer to the children’s schools in the east.
Established in 1906, Winning Appliances is a fourth generation family-run kitchen, cooking and laundry specialist.
Its 17th showroom opens next month at Chadstone Shopping Centre.
Balmain East’s last reported waterfront sale was last November.
The peninsula had a recent strong non-waterfront sale when Hexham fetched $7.5 million through Pillinger Real Estate.
