Steve Smith finishes Balmain project and is seeking tenants

Australian cricket captain Steve Smith is not leaving beachside Coogee.

His newly built Balmain East terrace is up for rent.

The world's best Test batsman had the option of heading to the Balmain peninsula, after buying three properties in as many years, but it will instead be keeping an eye on his $4 million portfolio from the east.

His Johnson Street knockdown rebuild replaced a cottage.

It is a charcoal-coloured two-storey modern home designed by architect firm Raymond Panetta Architects. 

The smart wired Balmain East property has three bedrooms, three bathrooms and a landscaped garden.

The casual living area opens to a terrace with Harbour Bridge views.

Cobden & Hayson agent Kate Ferrante isn't advertising a price, but industry insiders suggest a $2,000 plus a week rental.

It was Smith's first purchase on the peninsula, setting him back $2 million in 2015.  

Smith continued his peninsula purchasing, next securing a Beattie Street townhouse that cost him $1,345,000 in 2016.

That's recently been up for rent at $895 a week, down a bit on the $975 a week he sought upon his purchase.

The two bedroom property sits in the converted Tin Sheds.

Last year he quietly paid $1.95 million for a dilapidated Birchgrove cottage through Cobden & Hayson agent Danny Cobden.

The free-standing Victorian, marketed as a "vintage treasure ripe for reninvention", belonged to architect David Gole.

That's Smith's latest project, having recent approvals for the near 200 sqm parcel.

He's seeking to part demolish the existing dwelling, making alterations and additions to the ground floor and first floor.

There's also an application submitted to construct a new two storey dwelling on the newly created lot.

The estimated cost of the work is $900,000.

He retains his abode as apartment with ocean views in Coogee, which he bought in 2011 for $1.75 million.

His investment portfolio also includes a one bedroom plus study apartment in the Jameson complex in Sans Souci and a Marrickville apartment.

Smith is captaining Australia in the battle with South Africa, with the four match Test series tied at 1-1 after two games.

Property investment runs deep in the Australian team. His predecessor Michael Clarke was busy this week attending the launch of an off the plan Port Frederick development in which he has invested project funds.

Brett Hunter from Raine & Horne Terrigal/Avoca Beach said the Viciniti was a boutique block of 24 apartments with prices from $420,000 to $1.4 million.

“The broad price range means that Viciniti will appeal to downsizers from the Central Coast, Sydney and Newcastle, investors and first home buyers,” said Hunter.
