The Bulwark, Castlecrag's Bill Lucas Mid-century modern home listed
The Bulwark is one of Castlecrag's premier addresses and is where some of the finest examples of architecture from the late Bill Lucas are located.Bill Lucas are located.
Lucas built his family home with architect wife Ruth Harvey on the bushland street in 1957.
Dubbed The Glass House, constructed out of steel and glass, the four bedroom home was the first Lucas built on The Bulwark.
It last traded for $560,000 in 1998.
A decade later he would put his name to the two neighbouring homes.
Two years ago one of the homes sold for $2,055,000, and now the home next door is up for sale.
The four bedroom family home retains its Mid-century modernism, with split levels, white painted ceilings, open treat stairs, slate floors and a fish tank.
It spans three storeys with six different levels and integrates sandstone boulders that form part of the walls in the lower levels.
Entry to the home below street level is through a semi-tropical landscaped garden, with a curved path leading to a bridge across to the front door. The 740 sqm parcel of native bush leads down to Sailors Bay.
A number of outdoor decks and balconies overlook Castle Haven Reserve.
Modern House agent Marcus Lloyd-Jones has the listing.
In his early days, Lucas designed Moonbah Ski Lodge in Thredbo.
He was a part-time lecturer at the School of Architecture of the UNSW for a decade.
He and Harvey headed up the Paddington Society, which prevented the inner city suburb from comprehensive redevelopment and keep its charm and grandeur.
Worked on an off with Cracknell & Lonergan Architects.
