Melbourne Cup winning jockey pledges to spend winning on new house
Leading jockey Kerrin McEvoy, who won the Melbourne Cup on UK horse Cross Counter yesterday, has said he will put his winnings towards a bigger house for his family.
The race was worth a prize pot of $4 million, with McEvoy getting four percent, so around $200,000, which might cover half the deposit if he is looking to upgrade from his Sydney home.
McEvoy owns a house in Randwick (above) with his wife Cathy and four kids, who he promised there will be a swimming pool in their new digs.
“I promised my four kids a swimming pool. And Cathy and myself have been looking around for a bigger house," he told Channel 7 after the race.
“I said to one of the Herald Sun reporters yesterday that if I won I would buy Cathy a new house, so look out.”
McEvoy paid $3.45 million for a three bedroom, 1880s home in 2010 in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs, but it became a $1,300 a week rental in 2015.
McEvoy won The Everest on aboard Redzel last month, the richest race in the world on turf, which pocketed him around $300,000. He has now won it back to back years on Redzel since its inception in 2017.
