High-profile real estate agent John McGrath has reportedly scrapped plans to step up as executive chairman of his agency.

Peter Lewis seems set to be announced instead as the new chairman of the agency John McGrath founded in 1988.

Lewis is Kerry Stoke's former chief financial officer, Peter Lewis.

He left the Seven Network in 2013, then joined Southern Cross Media, but left the radio and metropolitan radio broadcaster.

McGrath is to remain as an executive director, but not its chief executive.

Privatising the company ''is off the agenda,'' spokesman Tim Allerton said on the weekend.

McGrath Estate Agents currently has 95 offices located throughout the east coast of Australia.

McGrath listed on the ASX in December 2015 at $2.10 and closed last week at 41¢.
