The premium South Australian wine business Rolf Binder is on the market for the first time in its 65 year history.
Owned by brother and sister Rolf Binder and Christa Deans, whose parents established the business in 1955, the sale includes more than 100 hectares of vineyards across five sites, a 1000-tonne capacity winery, cellar door and brands including JJ Hahn and Magpie Estate.
Binder said the time was right to sell after 65 years of commitment to the Barossa.
“This is an exciting opportunity for a buyer to take a significant stake in Australia’s premier wine region,” Rolf said.
“Our vineyard blocks are in the heart of the Barossa, including one directly adjacent to the key vineyards used to supply Penfolds Grange Hermitage.
“The time is now right to hand over the baton and watch the business fulfil its potential.”
The present 1000-tonne winery site on the corner of Seppeltsfield and Stelzer roads at Stonewell was initially built in 1998, ready for the 1999 vintage.
It is co-located with the cellar door and 25ha Chri-Ro Vineyard, which is predominantly planted with Shiraz.

The other four vineyards are dotted around the Barossa and all feature Shiraz with other varieties including Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Semillon, Mataro and Malbec.
Rolf Binder produces about 40,000 dozen a year, much of which is exported to the UK and Europe.
The sibling winemakers have worked together in the business since 1994.
Binder said he and Deans were looking for an outright sale or a partnership arrangement and were both prepared to stay on in the short to medium term as winemakers to assist with the business transition.

He said the Australian wine industry was evolving and providing excellent investment opportunities, particularly at the premium end of the market.
“Wine Australia data shows domestic wine sales increased 6.1 per cent in the past year, despite COVID-19. Internationally we’ve seen 3 per cent sales growth while average prices have jumped 16 per cent,” he said.
“We feel the business is well-positioned to capitalise on existing trends and emerging opportunities, with a secure and major fruit source in one of the world’s most renowned wine regions combined with good water allocations, an established distribution network, growing direct-to-consumer sales and an established, motivated and highly qualified team.”
The property and assets will be sold in an EOI process, which will have a closing date in October, in the hope that the transaction can be completed ahead of the 2021 vintage.
However, the sale comes at an uncertain time for the Australian wine industry with the coronavirus pandemic seriously impacting sales to restaurants and bars and threats from China, Australia’s largest export market, of potential sanctions on Australian wine imports.

South Australia's Rolf Binder wine business hits the market

De Bortoli Wines has acquired the Rutherglen Estates vineyards, winery and tourism facility in Victoria.
The purchase takes De Bortoli’s total Victorian vineyard holdings to 820 hectares, with 700 ha bearing fruit and 120 ha being in development.
The acquisition is part of its growth strategy.
The 185 hectare Rutherglen purchase was from its Hong Kong owner, Eternity International Enterprise Holdings.
The Rutherglen vineyard purchase complements the family’s existing premium Victorian vineyard holdings in the Yarra Valley, King Valley and Heathcote wine regions.
Rutherglen Estates provides De Bortoli Wines with a third winemaking facility in addition to the business’ Riverina and Yarra Valley sites.
The De Bortoli family anticipates that premium quality Victorian red wine with density, freshness and interest will increasingly be in high demand domestically and internationally.
The family said it estimates that its Victorian vineyards will produce over seven million bottles of wine by 2025 as it looks to make the most of the "premiumisation trend" which is key part of the Australian market.

De Bortoli Wines acquires the Rutherglen Estates vineyards

The Quoin Hill Vineyard &amp; Winery in Ballarat in the central highlands of Victoria is set to be traded for the first time in over three decades.
Winemaker and former champion rower Steve Coleman and wife Trish paid $60,000 for the 18 hectare estate back in 1983.
Formerly a sheep farm, <a href="https://www.realestate.com.au/property-house-vic-waubra-129030882" target="_blank">Quoin Hill Vineyard &amp; Winery</a> is the southernmost vineyard in the Pyrenees wine region.
The vines span three hectares of the property and include Shiraz, Pinot Grigio, Tempranillo, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
The first 2001 vintage of Shiraz and Chardonnay attracted Wine Show medals.
The chaff mill and stables which were built around a century ago have been turned into the winery and cafe/function room.
It has views over the vines and across the Pyrenees Ranges and seats 120 people.
The Edwardian homestead was originally built in 1906 and has been restored.
It has four bedrooms, a living and formal dining space with open fire place and a private home office.
The back of the house has been extended and now homes an open plan kitchen and second living area.

Greg 'The Great White Shark' Norman - who flew into Sydney this week - might be coming back to Australia on a more permanent basis.
The golfing legend, who has spent the last 40 years across the pond in the US, has signalled he is looking at buying a place Down Under.
And no ordinary home - he wants a vineyard. But his wife, Kirsten Kutner envisages their dream home in Queensland.
He apparently spends rainy Sundays in Florida checking out realestate.com.au for the current offerings.
"I would love to go back and have a place there," Norman told The Weekend Australian.
"I would love to have a vineyard.
"I don't know where; I love Margaret River, I lose the Barossa Valley, the Yarra Valley, the Hunter Valley."
His wife however, Sydney interior designer Kirsten Kutner, is a self-declared beach girl.
"I am a very chilled beach girl at heart so I hope one day to move back with Greg to build out dream home somewhere in Queensland."
"Australians are very hip and trendy and the culture is much more interesting than Florida," she says.
Norman, who was born in Mount Isa, far away from any beach in outback Queensland, owns a 2,400 square metre Florida mansion home, known as Tranquility.
It is on the ultra-exclusive Jupiter Island.
Featuring its own putting green, it was listed with US$55 million hopes last year. He paid US$4.9 million in 1991.
No sightings after he touched down this week on any vineyards, but Norman might be interested in the Rothvale Vineyard and Winery in the Hunter Valley which has just hit the market through Alan Jurd of Jurd's Real Estate.
The 5.5 hectare vineyard in Pokolbin has an established Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz Vineyard.
There are five separate self-contained cottages for tourists sit on the estate.
If Norman doesn't want any cellar door, a more private estate is the nearby Duview in the Hunter Valley which comes with spectacular views of the Brokenback Range.
Officially Norman was here to visit a $1 billion tourism development proposed for a former colliery site near Wollongong which will come with an 18 hole championship golf course and golf academy named after Norman by its Chinese developers.
He also attended the Cathedral Lodge course in Victoria which was designed at <a href="https://www.cathedralgc.com.au/user/login" target="_blank">Thornton, about 130 kilometres north-east of Melbourne</a>, for the <a href="https://www.instagram.com/cathedrallodge/" target="_blank">former Essendon Football Club chairman David Evans</a>.
Evans had a vision modelled on great private clubs like Augusta National.

Greg Norman sets sights on new Aussie winery home

Sam Arnaout has emerged as the buyer of the iconic vineyard and winery Dalwood Estate near Branxton.
The boss of Iris Capital paid $3 million plus for the 104 hectare property that fronts the Hunter River.
Established in the 1800s, the property with sandstone winery buildings and a concert amphitheatre is accredited as among the Hunter Valley's oldest wineries.
It was the site of some of the first vines planted in the colony by George Wyndham who also built the now heritage listed Dalwood House.
Pernod Ricard closed the tourism facilities known as Wyndham Estate in October 2014, citing commercial reasons for their decision.
Another purchase last year came when Arnaout bought the prized Sweetwater estate at Pokolbin. It's wines are now served at the Fountain Cafe.
The 48 hectare Pokolbin property came with initial hopes of $30 million, but $12 million was its last price guidance.
It produces Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz on 16 hectares. 
Arnaout bought the Kirby family Hungerford Hill boutique winery for $4.4 million.
He also owns 1.66 hectares of prime real estate in Newcastle's Hunter Street mall.
Arnaout, who entered the hotel industry in 1995, has a whole-floor penthouse in the Bennelong apartment complex which was bought from Margaret Maloney, the widow of the hotelier Cyril Maloney for $18 million in 2015.
Iris Capital owns expanded site, The Bourbon in Potts Point. 
The king of the emerging Kings Cross residential rejuvenation, has been quietly amassing a huge building site at Kings Cross's northern end around his Bourbon Hotel premises.
His Kings Cross purchases now total $66 million.

The market expectations are around $13 million for the Marsh Estate, which was established in 1971 as one of the original wine estates in Pokolbin.

Market expectations are around $7 million.

The Hunter Valley winery named after a fictional village in the 1980s hit TV series A Country Practice has been sold for $7 million.
It's been bought by a director of one of China's largest animation studios, Lap Tung Tsoi.
The Lovedale property was originally known as Millstone Vineyard.
The 40-hectare property was renamed Wandin Valley by the creator of A Country Practice, James Davern, and his wife Philippa following their purchase in 1990 for $900,000.
The Davern's redeveloped the property into a winery, building the cricket pavilion-style main residence, manager's cottage, modern cellar, function rooms for weddings, and adding the tourist accommodation.
Wandin Valley fetched $4.75 million in 2010 when sold to the Mosman couple Katrina and Russell Leslie, who is a former Macquarie investment banker.
Tsoi is a director in his family's international animation and toy manufacturing empire Alpha Group which was founded by his billionaire brother, Cai Dongqing, who was a co-producer of China's all-time highest box office grossing movie The Mermaid.
Tsoi owns an $11.7 million mansion in Vaucluse.
Scottish-born and trained as a chartered accountant, Russell launched himself into the Hunter wine industry in 2005 by buying the former George Hunter Estate vineyard then in 2006 by acquiring the adjoining Gartelmann vineyard.
In 2009 he paid $2 million for the Warraroong property and then the Wandin Valley Estate which was retained until the sale last month.

Chinese buy Wandin Valley winery

The Sweetwater Mediterranean-style weekender had been listed at around $12 million by Duncan and Lyn Hardie having come with initial hopes of $30 million.
Arnaout, who entered the hotel industry in 1995, has a whole-floor penthouse in the Bennelong apartment complex which was bought from Margaret Maloney, the widow of the hotelier Cyril Maloney for $18 million in 2015.
Established in 1967, Hungerford Hill Wines is an architectural icon, designed by architect Walter Barda on the Hunter’s most coveted gateway corner location, where 1.4 million visitors pass annually. 
The Kirby family acquired the premium Hungerford Hill brand from winemaker Southcorp in 2002. 
James Kirby developed the 22 hectares of land, mature vineyard, 300 tonne winery/cellar door, wine sales business, leased restaurant, brands and IP. It is a James Halliday 5-star winery.
Iris Capital owns some of Sydney's best-known hospitality venues including the Clovelly Hotel, The Bourbon in Potts Point and The Grand at Bondi Junction and a month ago snapped up the Colombian Hotel on Oxford Street from publican David McHugh for more than $15 million.
He has recently listed the popular Clovelly Hotel in Sydney's eastern suburbs having sold The Crest Hotel in Potts Point and the Crown Hotel Parramatta last year.
