Dalkeith, one of the Mornington Peninsula's oldest homes, has been listed for sale in Mount Martha.
The grand English Tudor country manor-style home was built around 1938.
It was originally owned by Mornington farmer, auctioneer and member of parliament William Vale, who left the estate to his daughter Phyllis and her husband, Herbert Jackson.
They renamed it Jackson Hill and trained horses and riders at the property. They owned Helion, who won the 1955 Australian Cup, which was later known as the Melbourne Cup.
There were reportedly 24 full-time staff at the property, which spread over more than 280 hectares on the west side of Mount Martha.
In 1974 the Dalkeith coastal estate of some 34 hectares was bequeathed to three hospitals – the Royal Melbourne, St Vincents and The Alfred.
The hospitals then onsold it as a private home.
The two-storey gabled Tudor-style mansion is set on four hectares, complete with a garden from the acclaimed landscaper Edna Walling.
The home retains its period-style features including exposed beam ceilings, timber panelling and stone fireplaces, all nine.
Peninsula Sotheby's International Realty agents Rob Curtain and Danielle Veins have a guide of $5.5 million to $6 million.

Mount Martha's Tudor trophy home Dalkeith listed

Businessman and commentator John Hewson has listed Invergowrie, the Tudor-style Exeter estate, this time for April 16 auction.
Built in the 1930s for the BHP industrialist Sir Cecil Hoskins, the seven bedroom house comes with library, ballroom, studies and billiard room.
The 26 acres grounds have Paul Sorensen gardens with tennis court, bocce pit, swimming pool, croquet lawn, orchard, vegetable gardens, a Japanese garden with waterfall, aviary and three guest houses.
Designed by architect Geoffrey Loveridge, Invergowie replaced Headlands, which had been owned by the Yates seed family.
Before that the Badgery family had what remains the landmark feature of the village of Exeter.
After several changes of ownership, Invergowrie was bought in the 1960s by the Fieldhouse family who invited Paul Sorenson to return and substantailly reverse his earlier planting; for while the Hoskins preferred to have trees and shrubs around the house leaving the boundaries open, the new owners wanted the main plantings to be on the boundaries.
Title Tattle gleans the main Invergowrie gates were relocated from Sydney in the late 1960s by the Fieldhouse family.
Hewson and his wife, Jessica Wilson have enlisted Michael Maloney at Richardson &amp; Wrench Bowral.
The trophy home sale came with $7.5 million expectations this time last year.

English architectural styles have been long influenced or associated with the reign of the Royals. There was King James I and his Jacobean style.
Tudor style flourished under the Tudor dynasty in England.
The current Queen's long reign hasn't developed any such style, though her son, Prince Charles is a noted commentator on architectural aesthetics.

The Edwardian era or Edwardian period in the United Kingdom is the period covering the reign of King Edward VII, 1901 to 1910, and is sometimes extended beyond Edward's death to include years leading up to World War I.

The Victorian era of British history (and that of the British Empire) was the period of Queen Victoria's reign from 20 June 1837 until her death, on 22 January 1901.

Georgian Period (1714 - 1830)
The Georgian era of British history is a period which takes its name from, and is normally defined as spanning the reigns of the first four Hanoverian kings of Great Britain who were all named George: George I, George II, George III and George IV.
Identifying features are quite distinctive:

<li>Panel front door centred, topped with rectangular windows and capped with an elaborate crown supported by decorative pilasters.</li>
<li>Cornice embellished with decorative moldings, usually dentilwork.</li>
<li>Multi-pane windows arranged symmetrically (whether vertical or horizontal), usually 5 across.</li>

Stuart Period (1603 - 1714)
The Stuart period of British history usually refers to the period between 1603 and 1714 and sometimes from 1371 in Scotland. This coincides with the rule of the House of Stuart, whose first monarch was James VI of Scotland. 
The period ended with the death of Queen Anne and the accession of George I from the House of Hanover.
The building design style associated with the Stuart Period was typified by square or round-headed windows and doors, flat ceilings,colonnades, pilasters, pediments and domes.
The Stuart period aesthetic, which included a flare of Jacobean, didn't travel too well across Australia.
The design is apparent in furniture but not necessarily architecture.

Tudor Period (1485 - 1603)
The Tudor period is the period between 1485 and 1603 in England and Wales.
It coincides with the rule of the Tudor dynasty in England whose first monarch was Henry VII (1457–1509). 
The Tudor period architecture followed the Perpendicular style and, although superseded by Elizabethan architecture in domestic building of any pretensions to fashion, the Tudor style long retained its hold on English taste.
