The NSW Government has launched an expression of interest process to garner interest from theatre operators in reopening Sydney’s Theatre Royal. 
Situated in the heart of the Sydney CBD, the 1,100-seat theatre designed by Harry Seidler has been closed since 2016.
Its reopening will allow NSW to deliver and host more major touring theatre productions.
Local and international theatre operators or owners are being sought to enter a long-term sub-lease to operate the theatre.
Applicants will be asked to identify any auditorium refurbishment requirements to operate the theatre from 2021.
Minister for Arts Don Harwin hopes reopening the historic Theatre Royal will help make Sydney number one again for musical theatre in Australia.
“With our existing lyric theatres booked out for years, reopening the Theatre Royal will reintroduce a vital part of the city’s cultural history, open up new employment opportunities and provide a boost for the NSW night-time economy,” Mr Harwin said.
“The theatre has an incredible history dating back to the 1820s and its reopening is backed by huge public demand. We are committed to finding the right operator with the right experience to continue its legacy and allow NSW to compete on the global musical theatre stage once more.”
NSW has secured 28 musical and theatre productions for Sydney since 2011. 
The EOI will close at <a href="https://tenders.nsw.gov.au" target="_blank">Wednesday 24 April 2019</a> via the eTendering website.
Sydney's Theatre Royal is part of Sydney's MLC Centre.

Theatre Royal Hotel in Hobart, originally built in 1834, is up for sale by tender under instructions from as receivers.
In its current state, the hotel at <a href="https://www.realcommercial.com.au/property-hotel+leisure-tas-hobart-501812270" target="_blank">31 Campbell Street</a> is a modern property adjacent to Theatre Royal, a historic venue for the performing arts, and opposite the Royal Hobart Hospital.
This area of the Hobart CBD is known as the "Wapping Precinct" and has seen residential units come up in recent years. The hospital is undergoing a $565-million upgrade.
The hotel has a floor area of 500 square metre and includes a public bar, atrium bar, dining room seating 90, function room, commercial kitchen, seven accommodation rooms and a managers residence (10 rooms in all).
Built in 1834 by Peter DeGraves (founder of Cascade Brewery), this two-storey complex is one of the oldest hotels in Australia.
Degraves (1778–1852) was an engineer who also studied architecture, and paid for the entire construction of Theatre Royal (1837) and remained its owner until his death, says the University of Tasmania website <a href="https://www.utas.edu.au" target="_blank">here</a>.
The zoning also allows for other uses such as apartments, retail, offices, education centre, childcare, visitor accommodation, shops etc.
An accommodation property in Hobart, which receives more than 70 percent of all visitors to Tasmania, is a good bet. The number of visitors to Tasmania exceeded 1.1 million for the 12 months to March 2015.
The property is being marketed by John Blacklow of Knight Frank and tenders close tomorrow, on February 11.
The hotel freehold last traded for $1.56 million in 2007, twice what was paid in 2002.

Hobart's 1830s Cascade Theatre Royal Hotel for sale

Co-owners of Sydney's Theatre Royal, part of Sydney's MLC Centre, have handed on lease and management to Ambassador Theatre Group.
ATG will now manage the large-scale refurbishment of the 1,100 seat theatre instead of co-owners QIC and The GPT Group .
GPT Chief Investment Officer Carmel Hourigan said the announcement of a new theatre operator is another important step in transformation.
"The MLC Centre would benefit greatly from partnering with one of the world’s top live theatre companies… it will become home to a new world class theatre and ATG has a strong track record of delivering premium productions,” Ms Hourigan said.
ATG are known for productions such as Legally Bonde the Musical, The Rocky Horror Show, Thriller Live, Guys and Dolls and West Side Story.
Founder Sir Howard Panter said ATG will work with MLC Centre co-owners on a major refurbishment of the theatre to improve its facilities and create a premium experience for theatre patrons.
“For ATG this heralds the dawn of its venue management operations in Asia Pacific, a region that will play a major part in our international expansion plan,” said Sir Panter.
