The latest development transforming Melbourne&rsquo;s south-eastern suburb of Malvern East is Landream&rsquo;s Hurstmon.

Boasting 39 residences in two and three-bedroom configurations, Hurstmon forms an eye-catching landmark while complementing the rich history of the suburb.

Designed by Telha Clarke, the project has a &ldquo;hidden-gem quality&rdquo; that extends into each residence and its layered textures, according to architect Tim Clarke.

One of the highlights of the project is the beautiful gardens and landscaping curated by Eckersley Garden Architecture (E-GA).

Urban recently sat down with E-GA&rsquo;s Scott Leung and Eleanor Cook to discuss the luxury development.

MK: How many multi-residential projects have Eckersley Garden Architecture been contracted on within Victoria?

SL+EC: E-GA are currently contracted to 28 mutli-resi developments around the inner suburbs of Melbourne, including South Yarra, Malvern, Malvern East, Hawthorn, Kew and Toorak.

MK: What spoke to you about Hurstmon in particular?

SL+EC: Locality in a very leafy suburb of Malvern and the proximity to the parklands

MK: What was the design brief for the project&#39;s landscaping?

SL+EC: Malvern is very well known for its green gardens, so the brief was one of symbiosis with the architecture and the neighbourhood. Keep it purely gardenesque, understated and relaxing.

MK: Where did you take your inspiration from?

SL+EC: Inspiration definitely comes from nature, so we do our best to represent nature in the gardens we design translated to an urban context for this project.

MK: How did you synthesise the development with the existing landscaping and greenery in the surrounding streets of Malvern East?

SL+EC: The key to making a project feel as though it was always part of the street fabric is to take note of the neighbourhood plant species. This way you can see what works as well as introduce some of these plants or similar species into the new landscape and stitching the street together.

Nothing better than borrowed landscape to enhance a garden.

MK: What was the biggest challenge during the design process?

SL+EC: As always there is a variety challenges with multi-residential projects however the one that stands out is the working of plant species across many levels and aspects.

At least it enables greater plant selection and diversity which is a big plus.

MK: How important is the choice of plants in a project such as this?

SL+EC: Plant selection is a majority priority for the success of the garden. Aspect will determine choice to ensure the plants longevity and tolerances. Nothing more fulfilling than seeing a garden thrive in all conditions

MK: What have you tried to do in the design that the average homebuyer may not notice straight away?

SL+EC:&nbsp;Planting combinations in a garden may seems natural but it takes a lot of knowledge on how a plant develops over time as well as how the layers form.

If this is done correctly a new owner can enjoy the experience the growth of the garden, even take ownership, much like a new developing child throughout the seasons.

Eckersley Garden Architecture shares inspiration behind the design of Hurstmon's garden areas

Landscape designer Rick Eckersley has listed Musk Cottage at Flinders on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula through RT Edgar.
It is Eckersley's 12-year labour of love on Musk Creek Road, having paid $2 million in 2006.
Rick, who grew up on a cattle and wool grazing property in Macarthur, in the Western District, studied at Burnley Horticultural College as a mature-age student.
He worked for Berwick City Council for three weeks, before leaving to start his own landscaping business.
<a href="https://e-ga.com.au/blog/2018/08/open-gardens-victoria-musk-cottage-spring-season-launch/" target="_blank">The four hectare weekender</a> was bought when it was almost entirely mown lawn with Eckersley wanting the garden "to look like a Fred Williams painting".
Using mostly Australian plants, it is a low-maintenance private garden, but also the test bed for his business, with Scott Leung and Myles Broad having shared credit for the garden's design.
Open Gardens Victoria's spring season of events launched last weekend with the opening of the garden at Musk Cottage.
The four-hectare spread includes dramatic sweeps of contrasting plants - think black-trunked ironbarks under-planted with wave-pruned privet and linden trees juxtaposed with lomandra.
it is both the private garden of leading designer Rick Eckersley and the test bed for his Melbourne practice.
In establishing Musk Cottage in 2008, the aim was a sustainable, low-maintenance, quintessentially Australian.
Scott Leung, who with Eckersley and Myles Broad, shares credit for the garden's design.

Twin Peaks House at Darling Point for sale

Fleming’s Nurseries has joined forces with developer Goldfields on its Winterfield project, to deliver landscaping across the entire development.
The nursery and landscape business will provide a selection of front garden designs that are to be included in the purchase of an allotment at the master-planned development.
There are six designs purchasers can choose from – all designed by Fleming’s at the direction of horticulturalist Wes Fleming.
Fleming has led the landscape plan for Winterfield (pictured) which will see a focus on trees and plants across the new community. He is previously known for his work with nine winning gardens at the Chelsea Flower Show in London.

“We hope to deliver outdoor spaces that enhance the beauty of Ballarat – rich in its flora and fauna and open green space,” Fleming said of the collaboration.
“Not only will purchasers receive a free front garden, they can also relish in the area’s natural surrounds and relaxed environment – something we worked hard to create and that will complement the Winterfield lifestyle.”
The development is also set to landscape 14 hectares of gardens and open green space, including the re-invigoration of the area’s existing creek to create multiple parks, wetlands and playgrounds.
Goldfields’ managing director, Marco Gattino, confirmed that Winterfield’s partnership with Fleming was centred on delivering a healthy lifestyle for all its residents.
“We wanted to make sure residents could enjoy their surroundings – both inside their home and when they are out in the community, which is why the landscaping has been a major focus from the outset,” Gattino explained.
“The five neighbourhoods within Winterfield will each have a distinguishing signature tree, such as the Golden Rain Tree and the Montpellier, adding to the aesthetic,” he said.
“Wes Fleming’s approach to Winterfield delivers something fresh to the market - it’s unlike any other development in Australia – it really does set a new benchmark for master-planned communities.”
Winterfield is currently selling blocks in Stage One with lot sizes ranging from 544sqm to 615sqm, and prices from $125,000.

Horticulturalist Wes Fleming to landscape Winterfield development

Landscaping Victoria celebrated their 2016 Industry Awards and 50th Anniversary Gala recently with Formation Landscapes walking away with five awards.
Formation Landscapes won the Landscape of the Year award. Formation Landscapes put forward two projects across a number of categories. Across the two projects, Formation claimed Landscape Design Under 60sqm, Landscape Design Over 200sqm, Residential Construction over $300,000 and the Grant Saltmarsh Memorial Feature in the Landscape Award.

Formation took out Landscape of the Year for their Surrey Hills Project, deemed a "useable, low maintenance entertainment space incorporating a kid friendly zone, and year-round functionality by the judges. The project was seen to be "a fantastic balance of both hard and soft scape elements, completed to an impeccable level of detail".
The judges across all categories praised Formation for their "clever and well considered" approach to such a difficult site. 
Entering the awards for the first time in their16 years of membership, Semken Landscaping won in the Landscape Management and Maintenance category for their Plenty Project.

For the second year running, Jane Jones Landscapes took out the Plants in the Landscape award for their Kew Project with a garden that "invites exploration and shines with personality and life". Timandra Design and Landscaping was awarded the top prize in the Sustainable Landscape category for their Warrnambool Project, with a High Commendation going to Robert Boyle Landscape Design, who also took out the same award in the Plants in the Landscape category.

Warrandale Industries won Commercial Landscape Construction under 500k for their Melbourne Zoo Lemur Project, as well for Hard Structures in the Landscape for their Grampians Hikers Camp Project.

PTA Landscapes won the Commercial Construction over 500k category, taking out the win for their Monash University Clayton Project.
Australian Ecosystems were awarded a High Commendation for their Ascot Vale Project.

COS Design claimed victory in the Landscape Design 60-200sqm'category with their Canterbury Project and took out a commendation for their Caulfield Project in the same category.
COS Design also received two highly commendation nods in the Landscape Design under 60 sqm category, and Ccmmendations in both the 'Landscape Design over 200sqm category and the Grant Saltmarsh Feature in the Landscape category.

Bayon Gardens took out the top prize in the Residential Construction under 50k category with their Camberwell Project, and a commendation in the Rising Star Category.

This year's Rising Star award was presented to Landscape Plus, accepted by director Chris Keay. Awarded to a business less than 5 years of age, judges felt that Landscape Plus impressed the most with their business structure, knowledge and ambition.

In his acceptance speech Chris Keay thanked his partner for her support over the past 4.5 years and acknowledged the immense amount of hard work and sacrifice that goes into starting up a business and praised those companies who themselves had taken that leap.
Superior quality, excellent communication and consistent product supply saw Warners Nurseries take out the Supplier of the Year awards, while a joint win was presented for Apprentice of the Year to Erik Holt of Ian Barker Gardens

Formation Landscapes scoops the pool as Landscaping Victoria celebrates 50 years

Meredith Kirton, a former presenter on Gardening Australia, has secured the pre-auction sale of her Putney home.
It has been the family home of the horticulturalist, author and broadcaster and her husband Michael Bradfield since they paid $345,000 in 1997.
The Frances Rd home, positioned on the high side of the street with <a href="https://www.firstnationalnorth.com.au/buy-residential-real-estate/house-36-frances-road-putney-nsw-11364100494" target="_blank">views across Morrison Bay</a>, is a three-bedroom cottage.
It was built entirely of termite-proof white cedar sourced from the Walgett farm owned by the original owners 100 years old.
It sold through First National agent Benjamin Mulae and Angie Wong who were giving $1.8 million plus price guidance seemingly secured close to $2 million.
