The second site of Richmond High School is on track to open in time for the commencement of the 2019 school year, with the Academic Building now topped out.

Earlier this week, Minister for Education James Merlino and Member for Richmond Richard Wynne toured the $43 million school which will cater for 650 Year 7-12 students.

The new Richmond High School is located across two sites comprising an academic precinct on Griffith Street and a sports precinct on Gleadell Street.

Image: Supplied</figcaption></figure>With the roof of the Griffiths Street campus now complete, the second campus will be ready for Term 1, 2019 and will cater for the second intake of Year 7 students in addition to students moving into Year 8.

The Griffiths Street Campus will have four levels featuring learning and staff facilities, as well as outdoor spaces for learning, gathering and play.

The Gleadell Street campus includes general purpose teaching spaces, four competition-standard netball courts including one indoor, as well as new showers and toilets, a canteen and administration area.

According to architects Hayball, the atrium is "the physical and symbolic heart of the academic building, a single unifying space that brings everyone in the school together." The idea of connectivity extends to the exterior of the building which has been designed to express a ground plane strongly connected to the landscape.

Internally, specialist space will be evident across the four levels with the school shifting from traditional classrooms and teaching models to learning spaces that are targeted, purposeful spaces promoting a range of activities and experiences catered to staff and student needs.

The school has been designed to provide a hub for the community. At the Griffiths and Gleadell Street campuses, spaces for students to learn, gather and play can be used by community members, including the outdoor amphitheatre, three external netball courts, performing arts facilities and café environment.

Richmond High School's Academic Building tops out

Melbourne's latest public vertical high school is edging closer to reality. After being officially revealed last month by the Victorian School Building Authority, Prahran High School's construction tender is drawing to a close.

The facility will be Melbourne's third vertical high school, following on from examples in South Melbourne and Richmond.

On a site fronting High Street, demolition on the Gray Puksand-designed project is underway and construction will begin mid year, with the intention of being student ready by Term 1, 2019. 650 students across years 7-12 will be accommodated within the project which is valued at $25m.

Image: Gray Puksand</figcaption></figure>In addition to traditional learning and library spaces, Prahran High School will also boast break out areas, a gym, an outdoor running track/recreational area and a passive green area. Outdoor terraces will also be included across each level.

The evolution of public schooling within Melbourne's inner suburbs is a fairly recent event, headlined by the South Melbourne Primary School who's design was awarded the Future Project of the Year at the 2016 World Architecture Festival Awards. It is now heading skyward with the initial ground works giving way to the steel structure that will form the support for the six storey build.

Completion is still earmarked for the end of this year.

<figcaption>SMPS is on the rise</figcaption></figure>The vertical nature of the South Melbourne, Richmond and Prahran projects has allowed for an equal of greater number of students to be accommodated on a fraction of the land required relative to traditional school campuses. The new South Melbourne and Richmond campuses have incorporated communal facilities with their respective builds.

Prahran High School on the other hand will be built within the existing educational precinct which includes Melbourne Polytechnic and the National Institute of Circus Arts.

1,800 additional students will be accommodated across the three projects.
