Sitting within the historic Porter House, built in 1876, the MGallery hotel will rise five storeys and maintain the building&rsquo;s heritage sandstone fa&ccedil;ade, while the new residential tower soars above.

Designed by architecture firm Candalepas Associates with interiors by the interior designer StudioAria, the striking modern structure appears to float over the heritage-listed building, interwoven to achieve a balance of beauty and liveability.

The Manhattan-style apartments feature sculptural cantilevers, alcoves and honeycomb-like arches.

&ldquo;I can imagine, in years to come, that Porter House and the new tower building will merge into one in people&rsquo;s consciousness, as if the entire assembly always coexisted&rdquo;, architect Angelo Candalepas said.

What extra luxuries residents at Castle Residences, Sydney, get as part of AccorHotels partnership

When <a href="https://www.urban.com.au/architects/candalepas-associates-0" target="_blank">Candalepas Associates</a> were commissioned to lead the design for Sydney&#39;s new landmark project, <a href="https://www.urban.com.au/new-apartments/castle-residences-203-castlereagh-street-sydney" target="_blank">Castle Residences</a>, developer <a href="https://www.urban.com.au/developers/united-development-sydney" target="_blank">United Development Sydney</a> gave a simple yet challenging design brief: to create &quot;a work of art&quot;.

The award-winning Sydney-based firm led by Angelo Candalepas strived to achieve this by creating a series of spaces that evoke emotion, thought and discussion.&nbsp;

From the building&#39;s base, you can see cascading greenery &ndash; which Angelo refers to animatedly as a &quot;head of hair&quot;.

&quot;The intention was to form a very soft top so that when people see the building in the skyline, it distinguishes itself from buildings which are flat-roofed, but also enables an enormous amount of green to be present.&quot;

Personification and lightheartedness are also carried through into the building&#39;s interiors, with the Candalepas team drawing inspiration from the human eye.&nbsp;

&quot;At the time of the competition, what we had thought was a very beautiful representation of form was the arch &ndash; it&#39;s so arresting to the human eye because of many reasons - but the primary one I believe is that it is in the form of the human eye. 

What we&#39;ve done is created imprints of the human eye for the homes and when you think about - a series of beautiful eyebrows representing both the expression of the building outwardly and the impression of the building inwardly.

While the design team had plenty of creative freedom to explore imaginative ideas, the historical context of the area was taken into account to ensure the building seamlessly integrated within its surroundings.

Key landmarks that influenced the design were Porter House, St Georges Church, the Workers Club, the old Telstra Exchange and Lincoln House.

&quot;All of these things [historical landmarks] have to factor into what we do - there is no point in pretending that we&#39;re working in a vacuum and so it&#39;s important to recognise that the site comes with an understanding of everything that existed prior to when we came.&nbsp;

My feeling is that when the scaffolding comes down there will be an overwhelming sense that it [the building] has a contextual presence &ndash; that the building has a sense of being of its place, but also a sense of being of its time &ndash; which is going to make it look different to the other buildings, but respect them.&quot;&nbsp;

As Castle Residences reaches the completion of its construction timeline, Angelo, who has been working on the project for over 10 years, will be able to see his team&#39;s vision in its built form, standing 36 stories tall on the prominent Sydney CBD site.&nbsp;

'It has a head of hair' – Castle Residences' architect discusses the unique and distinguishing features of the new Sydney landmark development

The latest prospective development looking to add to the nation's largest office market landed at planning earlier this month.

City of Sydney has fielded a request to add a slim 13 storey office building at 4-6 York Street, just south of Wynyard Station which is itself subject to a substantial commercial development. The $29 million York Street development bid also includes alterations and refurbishments to the adjoining 341 George Street building. 

In vogue design practice Candalepas Associates was tasked with design duties by development entity 6 York Street Pty Ltd which is controlled by NGI Investments.

<figcaption>Planning image: Doug &amp; Wolf</figcaption></figure>Candalepas Associates' designs intentions sees the tight 611 square metre site which is now an at grade car park and single storey building adorned with a tower spanning 55.4 metres. Owing to the site's small footprint, ground floor amenities within the scheme are contained to 143 square metre cafe/bar alongside lobby requirements.

Thereafter "the new building will be physically connected to the existing building at 341 George Street, and there will be access between most floors of the two buildings which will necessitate some alterations to the existing building." A typical floorplate within the new addition spans 500 square metres, with a project Gross Floor Area of 6,128 square metres.

<figcaption>Planning image: Doug &amp; Wolf</figcaption></figure>The combined size of the York and George Street buildings will still see the overall development at the lower end of the size scale relative the healthy number of substantial office towers proposed and in development through Sydney's core.

Perhaps most noteworthy is AMP's Quay Quarter Sydney project designed by 3XN. The 200 metre redevelopment of AMP's existing headquarters has just received its first tower crane that will in part facilitate the delivery of a new 102,000 head office for the financial services company.

It along with 55,500 square metre Circular Quay Tower at 182 George Street, 60 Martin Place and the aforementioned 59,000 square metre Wynyard Place are among Sydney's largest office developments under construction.

Further developments in their infancy include the approximately 40,000 square metre Metro Martin Place development.
