Construction provider Icon has been announced as the preferred tenderer to construct the $300m mixed-use precinct The Village Alphington in Melbourne's north-east.

The 80,000 sqm project involves the delivery of build-to-rent, affordable housing, commercial and retail shopping precincts. There will be 2,500 new dwellings within the project.

Work on the project, located on the former Amcor Paper Mills site bordering Heidelberg Road and Latrobe Avenue 10 minutes from the CBD, will commence in the second quarter of 2021 following design development.

Evan Byrne, Icon CEO/Managing Director said “This is another significant milestone in the growth of the Icon business since the acquisition by Kajima.

"Our teams have experience in projects of this scale and complexity, and it's pleasing that our business today has the balance sheet strength to support this capability. We have been working in some capacity on this project since its inception more than five years ago, and it is very satisfying to see the client's vision become a reality.

"We’re excited to be working alongside client Alpha Partners as construction partner, with potential for further involvement utilising the Icon Group's wider capabilities, including finance and development.”
