Former South African rugby winger Kevin Schraader, who converted to league, playing for Canterbury in the late 1990s, has sold his contemporary Woollahra residence for $4.2 million.

Title Tattle gathers he is swapping elsewhere within Woollahra, buying the prized $7.45 million heritage residence, Althorne on Edgecliff Road through Sothebys International.

The redundant contemporary Wallis Street, Woollahra property was listed through Di Jones agents Gary Sands and Jane Schumann with $4 million expectations.

It last traded in 2011 at $3.9 million.

Title Tattle recalls it was built in 2000 on its 270 square metre block to a design by architect Alexander Tzannes on the former Hamilton Beach carpet shop site which was bought in 1996 by Sabrina Van der Linden-Wolanski, who commissioned Tzannes to design adjoining houses.

Althorne, the mid-Victorian mansion was sold by the Evans family who had initial $9 million price hopes.

The six-bedroom, five-bathroom 1872 residence is on a north-facing 1023 square metre block which was from the Conley family for $2.56 million in 1998.

It had been renovated and extended by Paul Davies Architects and Heritage Consultants with interiors by designer Darryl Gordon and gardens by landscaper William Dangar.
