Waratahs backorder Michael Wells was the buyer of an $890,000 Lane Cove apartment at onsite auction earlier this month.
 
He's been a Lindfield resident to date, living at home with his mum and dad.

The 24 year old Wells, who is studying commerce law at Macquarie University, gave his girlfriend, Amelia a big hug after the hammer came down.

They were up against six other registered bidders, at the auction conducted by Belle Lane Cove agent Patrick Lang.

The auction was broadcast live on Sky News's Saturday afternoon real estate show.

The pre-auction price guidance was $825,000, but the opening bid was $845,000.

Wells' first bid was next at $860,000.

At 6 foot 3 inches he stood out in the auction crowd.

The refinished 1960s unit last sold for $575,000 in 2011.

CoreLogic calculate the Land Cove two bedroom median unit price sits at $830,000.

It had been a $600 a week rental during 2016.

As a youngster he was selected to the Australian Sevens Program for the 2014/15 Sevens World Series after strong performances for the North Harbour Rays in the 2014 National Rugby Championship.

He has also represented Australian Schoolboys in 2011 and Australia at the U20 level and has played for Northern Suburbs in Sydney’s Shute Shield.
