A Melbourne suburb has been named the 5th "coolest neighbourhood" in the world
Urban ChrisJanuary 21, 2021

Each year global media outlet, Time Out, pools together a year's worth of research from top food critics, travel experts and entertainment editors, along with a comprehensive city-dweller survey, to decide on the world's top 40 coolest suburbs. Not only did Australia make the cut twice this year, with 'cool cities' noted in both Melbourne and Sydney, but Victoria's own Yarraville claimed a coveted 5th place ranking.

Through the COVID-19 lockdowns, kindness in the community overrode that of 'coolness' – we saw toy treasure hunts for children, people offering to deliver groceries to neighbours in need, generous support of local businesses and greater use of the existing public spaces (while socially distancing). Time Out explained that the Melbourne neighbourhood representing the best of what the "wonderful city" has to offer is Yarraville – with two lockdown stories to support their choice:

  1. Yarraville local Lee Smith-Moir's 'happy signs' strategically placed along walking tracks to cheer up locals during the second lockdown period
  2. Roller skater Belle Hadiwidjaja's daily performances, which kept locals entertained on their solitary lockdown walks

Other features that won Yarraville the '5th coolest suburb title'

  • The variety of culinary options in the area, with Indigenous-owned restaurant Mabu Mabu, noted as a favourit
  • The Art Deco cinema Sun Theatre
  • Friendly community spirit

"With an epicurean edge and a perfect balance of residential and recreational, right now there's no place like Yarraville." - Time Out
