At Mount Eliza, property developer Greg Farmer is selling his historic estate, Hendra with $8 million hopes after close to two decades ownership.

Set on 1.7 hectares over three lots, the property features a four-bedroom Old English-style house designed by the Melbourne architect Harry Norris.

With its rare, almost medieval high-pitched terracotta shingled roof it has been listed through Michelle Skoglund at Aqua Real Estate Mount Eliza and Ian Jackson Kay & Burton Brighton.

Shaped like a boomerang, the single-storey house dates back to its design for Sir Edgar and Dame Mabel Coles by Norris who made something of a speciality of working for the rich and famous, having also designed Burnham Beeches for the Nicholas family.

It was once part of the estate of more than 27 hectares built up by Sir Edgar Coles, one of the five famous Coles brothers, the knights Sir George (G.J.), Sir Arthur, Sir Edgar, Sir Kenneth and Sir Norman, from the family retailing firm.

The Williams Road house was designed for extravagant entertaining and family living with staff quarters, a walled swimming pool and large reception rooms.

Offers are due May 28.
