Inside Sutherland: Heritage apartments in the heart of Adelaide

Adelaide's East End is about to witness a transformation of historic proportions as local developer Edberg Developments continues to work on its heritage project, Sutherland.

Edberg is repurposing the state heritage-listed former Salvation Army Women's Hostel at 341 Angas Street to create Sutherland, just eight two and three-bedroom terrace-style apartments in the heart of the city.

Edberg Developments has enlisted Matthews Architects to design an extra storey to the three-level property and a contemporary four-level extension at the rear, ensuring the eight boutique apartments are architecturally seamless.

Inside, the engineered herringbone timber flooring in living areas and plush carpets in bedrooms provide a touch of luxury.

The gourmet kitchens feature porcelain benchtops and are well-equipped with Smeg appliances, including a 700mm induction cooktop, 600mm pyrolytic oven, microwave, 900mm rangehood, and Diamond series dishwasher.

The Legrand Smart Home system, heated flooring in the ensuite, and Allume Solshare system add a layer of convenience and comfort, while video intercom, high acoustic separation, and secure parking at ground level, ensure a secure and quiet living environment.

Sutherland also sets a benchmark for sustainable design. The development incorporates LED energy-efficient light fixtures, five-star water-efficient taps and shower roses, double glazing to all new windows, shared solar distribution to all apartments, and shading to north and west-facing windows.

Residents will enjoy immediate proximity to the expansive parklands, while a stroll away lies Hutt Street, lined with its vibrant array of cafes and restaurants—offering the perfect blend of urban convenience and natural tranquillity on Sutherland's doorstep.

Construction by builder TBC is expected to commence early this year, with completion for the Adelaide development estimated in March 2025.
