An off the plan Sydney penthouse has sold for $27 million to set a new Australian apartment record.

The sale of the penthouse in the planned Opera Residences development at Circular Quay comes just days after a buyer paid $26 million for another penthouse in the same development.

The 20-level Circular Quay tower is to be developed by Macrolink Landream.

All but one of the 110 apartments sold before midday Saturday, including the remaining sub penthouse, which went for $16 million.

The $27m penthouse was sold through CBRE agent Tim Rees who also sold the $26 million apartment.

The $27 million deal was signed “unconditionally” and the buyer was a local.

Construction of Opera Residences, on the site of the old Coca-Cola Amatil building, will start in April with a December 2019 completion.

The two Opera Residences penthouse prices beat the previous record for the most expensive Australian apartment set by Melbourne’s Australia 108 development, where a penthouse sold last year for $25 million.
