The London-based former foreign minister Alexander Downer and wife, Nicky secured $1,125,000 when Brampton House, their Adelaide Hills family home sold mid-last year.

Downer is currently serving as Australia's high commissioner to Britain, a job his father did in the 1960s.

The sale was among the $243 million in house sales last year in the Adelaide Hills municipality. There were 550 houses sold, according to RP Data, at a $430,000 median. There was a $440,000 median in 2013 and a $460,000 median in 2010.

The busiest year, with almost 600 houses sale, was 2013.

Brampton House is named after the Derbyshire town where Nicky Downer was born.

Toop & Toop agent Arabella Cooper was expecting $1.2 million plus for the five-bedroom, two-bathroom home set on four hectares where six cross bred Dorper sheep kept the grass down.

The one-storey house, 20 minutes up the South Eastern Freeway from Adelaide, has a pool, tennis court and spring-fed dam.

There are views north-east over the Onkaparinga Valley.

The Downers found the land at Mount George in 1988 while living in Macclesfield.

They are empty nesters as their four children no longer live at home.
