BGC Construction has taken out a key category at the Australian Master Builders Housing/ Construction Excellence Awards, winning national recognition for its $36 million St Ives Carine project.

The project, which was completed in June 2017, marks a growing trend towards high-end vertical retirement communities in WA.

BGC Construction’s leadership in this area saw it receive the National Lifestyle Housing for Seniors Award – Retirement Villages, at the Master Builders National Excellence in Building and Construction Awards ceremony held in Adelaide.

BGC Construction Retirement and Unit Development Manager John Irvine said the St Ives Carine project represented a growing trend in development of retirement communities, with a number of other multi-storey retirement offerings now planned or coming to market in WA.

St Ives Carine comprises a total of 63 luxury apartments, with a range of architecturally and sustainably designed 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom products.

Communal facilities include landscaped gardens and BBQ area, a restaurant and café, library, on-site hairdressing salon, art studio, medical rooms and health pavilion with an indoor heated pool and gym.

Between 2000 and 2010, only 7% of retirement dwellings built by the company were apartments – but since then, that figure has jumped to 66%.

“We’re seeing a new way of living for the growing number of baby-boomers who want the benefits of living in their own home, surrounded by everything they need to enjoy their twilight years,” said Mr Irvine.

This award continues a track record of success for BGC Construction within the retirement sector, which in 2017 was awarded the Master Builders WA Award for "Best Seniors/Aged Persons Multi Unit Development" for its Akora Apartments in Bentley for the SwanCare Group.

In 2015, the company also received the Master Builders WA Award for "Best Seniors/Aged Persons Multi Unit Development" and the national award for "Lifestyle Housing for Seniors award - Multi Unit Development" for its Orion Terraces in Bullcreek for the RAAFA WA organisation.
