The long-held Mittagong home of retired politician Peter Garrett and wife Doris has finally sold, for around $2.8 million.

The couple have been trying to Rowe Cottage ever since they paid $2.7 million in March last year for a do-up in Paddington.

The renovation is set to have space for a music studio at the rear as Garrett revealed last year that he started writing songs again.

The former Labor MP fronted the classic Aussie rock band Midnight Oil from 1973 until 2002.

Peter and Doris owned the historic Mittagong residence for over two decades, having paid $531,000 for the 5.8 hectare property in 1995.

They renovated the Queen Anne Federation home, adding a tennis court, cricket pitch and separate guest cottage.

It sold to a local couple not far from the last asking price of $2.95 million. It was initially listed with $3.3 million hopes through John Renouf at Drew Lindsay Real Estate.
