Plaque in honour of Sir Robert Torrens unveiled
TressCox Property Partner Gary Newton, as the Chairman of the Australian Property Law Group of the Law Council of Australia, was part of a recent dedication ceremony for a plaque in memory of Sir Robert Torrens at a church in Leusdon, England, where he is buried.
Sir Robert Torrens, the third Premier of South Australia, invented the worldwide Torrens title system in Adelaide in 1858 - a simplified system of transferring land.
The plaque was erected by the Law Council of Australia and the Australian Institute of Conveyancers.
The ceremony was attended by a group of pre-eminent Australian property lawyers as well as the President of the Institute of Conveyancers Santina Taranto, the Secretary General of the International Property Registries Association Dr Nicholas Nogueroles, and Professor Peter Butt, as well as a large local church congregation.
