Urban layout walkability the key as people ditch cars for their feet

Car culture isn't dead yet, but many big-city US neighbourhoods - even outside New York - are looking at increased transportation by foot.

By designing compact, urban layouts with tighter street grids, some areas are purposely encouraging residents to stay in the 'hood for their work, purchases, dining, imbibing, fun, relaxation and sleeping.
