Annandale Hotel to be live music venue, not redeveloped for residential apartments

The Annandale Hotel is set to remain an entertainment venue.

Leichhardt Council has advised confirmation from the selling agent that its being sold to an undisclosed publican, not a residential developer. The hotel is on a 638 square metre Parramatta Road holding.

The Mayor of Leichhardt Councillor Darcy Byrne said that the news that the Annandale has been saved from redevelopment vindicated Council’s ongoing campaign to transform Parramatta Road into Sydney’s first live music precinct.

The live music precinct plan involves Leichhardt, Marrickville and Sydney City councils presenting a proposal to the state government asking Parramatta Road to be rezoned to allow live music.

The Minister Brad Hazzard has indicated his in-principle support.

“Saving the Annandale, Sydney’s most iconic live music venue, is a mighty victory for music lovers across Sydney,” Darcy Byrne said.

“I am proud that we have fought to keep the doors of the Annandale hotel open and we have prevailed.

“This victory must be the turning point for Sydney’s struggling live music scene.

“We will now accelerate our campaign to transform Parramatta Road into Sydney’s first live music zone

“The thousands of young people who have joined this campaign have put live music on the political agenda.

“I am calling on music lovers across Sydney to join our fight to save live music in this city before it is too late," he said.

Expressions of interest for the hotel sale closed in early May through Knight Frank.

The 1930s hotel last traded in 1998 at $2.1 million when bought by Matt and Dan Rule.

It became a live music venue in the 1980s launching the careers of acts including Jet and the Living End.

It has been periodically threatened with closure by Leichhardt Council over noise compliance.
