The grand penthouse in Richmond's Jaques development has sold for $4.8 million to a Glen Iris couple.

The suburb's previous apartment price record was $3 million.

Kristine Lee from Developer Riverlee Group said the development has proved to be a hit with the downsizer market seeking large apartments, resulting in over 20 buyers combining apartments to create more spacious residences.

The $290 million Jaques precinct features 377 apartments and townhouses across five buildings on the former Jaques Bros Foundry site.

The south-western entrance to the site features factory’s original red brick tower with original drawings and blueprints for the manufacturing of the rock crushing machinery shown across three of the buildings.
