A young couple edged out AFL Geelong Cats interest in a Newtown property at weekend auction.

Gary Ablett and teammate Gryan Miers were both spotted keenly watching the auction among the 50 onlookers in the crowd.

Buxton Newtown auctioneer Ben Riddle announced the property was on the market at $680,000.

It sold for $720,000 under the hammer.

The couple who had been renting in Barwon Heads made a late play for the three-bedroom weatherboard house at 309 Autumn Street.

The character home had been listed with price hopes from $655,000 and $695,000.
