Carlton is a suburb of inner Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It is located 3 km north-west of the CBD and is bordered by North Melbourne to the south-east, Parkville to the east and Fitzroy to the north. The 2011 Census recorded Carlton's population as 12,853.

Carlton began as a township in 1851 and grew rapidly during the Victorian gold rush. It was named after William Carlton, who discovered gold in Ballarat. The suburb became a municipality in 1858 and was proclaimed a city in 1884.

Today, Carlton is an eclectic mix of residential streets lined with Victorian terraces and Federation homes, commercial areas with busy streets and laneways, and educational institutions including nearby University of Melbourne and RMIT University.
