Walker Corporation’s Horizon Centre proposal is set to transform the heart of the Sunshine Coast revealing plans for a world-class 7,000-seat games arena, athlete village and 5-star hotel.&nbsp;

Designed to be a premier destination for Brisbane 2032, the state-of-the-art Horizon Centre has the capacity to host Olympic action, and provide accommodation for 1400 athletes and guests, cementing the Sunshine Coast as a key games and tourism destination and delivering a major legacy for Queensland.

Plans for the Horizon Centre have been submitted in a detailed submission to the Games Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority’s (GIICA) Brisbane 2032 Olympics 100-Day Review.&nbsp;

The detailed submission focussed on the legacy outcomes for the Sunshine Coast whilst delivering key infrastructure needed for the Games. The 1,400 athlete beds will transform into much needed accommodation for the Coast, whilst the 7,000-seat multi-format arena will evolve into a world-class arts, music, convention, entertainment and exhibition centre, finally unlocking the region’s potential to host the biggest global concerts and events.&nbsp;

The highly sustainable precinct will also deliver large areas of open space, tailor made for athletes to relax between competition and provide long term recreation areas for the Sunshine Coast community.

The project will be delivered as a Public Private Partnership (PPP) between Australia’s largest diversified private property company Walker Corporation, Australia’s top private construction company Built and global leading architects Woods Bagot.

Walker has over 50 years’ experience delivering urban transformations, previously partnering with Built to complete over $3 billion of projects together across Australia, as well as delivering some iconic urban precincts with Woods Bagot.&nbsp;

Walker Group Executive of Development Peter Saba said the PPP will enable the private sector to provide the necessary funding needed to begin the $1 billion Horizon Centre sooner, ensuring delivery certainty and the quality to exceed Brisbane 2032 requirements.

“By uniting the combined strengths of the public and private sectors through the PPP model, a balanced approach to risk sharing will enable innovative, legacy driven outcomes to be realised on time and on budget,” Saba said.

“The PPP model provides the certainty needed to deliver the Sunshine Coast the multi-use arts, music, convention, entertainment and exhibition centre the region has been in desperate need of for decades, while ultimately giving the Coast a world class venue to host more Olympic competition or heats action.”&nbsp;

Built and Woods Bagot are currently delivering the $450m Nyaal Banyul Geelong Convention and Event Centre together in Victoria.

Built Executive Chairman Marco Rossi said they are ready to deliver this city-shaping precinct to enhance the Brisbane 2032 legacy.

“We are excited to leverage our global experience to create this architectural landmark for Maroochydore that will be a sustainable, world-class events space, while also providing critical social and employment outcomes,” Mr Rossi said.

Woods Bagot Chief Executive Officer Sarah Kay said the Horizon Centre will leverage their global experience in civic assets to create a multipurpose, future-proofed facility for all of South East Queensland.&nbsp;

“The Horizon Centre will be a premium architectural icon for the Sunshine Coast seamlessly integrating the arena with a multi-modal transport network, providing a secure athletes village, and carefully blending open space, landscaping and community into a cohesive outdoor environment,” Mrs Kay said.

The Horizon Centre will have dedicated car parking and capitalise on Maroochydore City Centre’s 10-minute connection to the Sunshine Coast International Airport and major transport routes, becoming the economic, cultural and civic heart of the region and a catalyst for global events, tourism and investment.&nbsp;

The Horizon Centre proposal is currently under review with GIICA, which is set to present its recommendation from the 100-Day Review to the Queensland Government in March 2025.

Walker Corporation has received Development Approval for its twin towers in Maroochydore City Centre, bringing 251 new homes to one of the country’s tightest residential real estate markets.

Comprising two 19-storey towers, <a href="https://www.urban.com.au/new-apartments/sol-by-walker-maroochydore-first-ave-maroochydore">SOL by Walker</a> will feature a mix of one to four-bedroom apartments, townhouses and penthouses, anchored by ground-floor retail shops, bars and restaurants.

Walker Corp is continuing its push in South East Queensland.

A few weeks after its Robina megasite was given fast tracked approval to develop 2,750 homes, Walker Corp has pushed the go button on <a href="/new-apartments/sol-by-walker-maroochydore-first-ave-maroochydore">Sol by Walker</a>, on its large Maroochydore CBD site.

The developer has filed $220 million plans for a two-tower, mixed-use development with 251 dwellings. The towers will share a three-level podium that will home extensive commercial and retail spaces.

The 6,715 sqm sits on the corner of&nbsp;First Avenue and Future Way. The 19-level towers will be inlign with Habitat Development Group's recently completed The Corso apartment development.

Walker Corp is proposing 55 one-bedroom apartments, 111 two-bedrooms, 80 three-bedrooms, including 11 townhouses, and five four-bedroom apartments.&nbsp;

The town planning report by Walker Corporation&nbsp;Principal Planner,&nbsp;Nicole Topple, said the proposed diversity of housing stock in the development will provide dwellings at various price points, allowing a cross-section of the population with differing demographics and family sizes to move into the development. A third of the proposed dwellings comprise three or more bedrooms, providing opportunities for families.

Plus Architecture said in its design report that&nbsp;Sol in Maroochydore sets a new benchmark for high-quality residential living, serving as a catalyst for future development in the Maroochydore Town Centre.

"This project seamlessly combines design excellence, sustainability, and sub-tropical living principles, creating a vibrant and engaging public realm."

They said the development goes beyond being a residential building, offering active public interfaces, inviting lobbies, and shaded public spaces that foster community interaction.

"Awnings along commercial and retail frontages, along with integrated street trees and vegetation, enhance the pedestrian experience and reflect sub-tropical design considerations. Robust materials and thoughtful landscaping ensure the building's longevity, allowing it to withstand coastal conditions while remaining aesthetically appealing."

Sustainability is at the core of the design, Plus noted, with provisions for electric vehicle (EV) charging, resilient plant species, and vegetated rooftops that reduce the heat island effect and enhance the urban environment.

They said expansive recreational areas promote community interaction, creating a strong sense of belonging among residents.

"Architecturally, the design is inspired by the natural formations of the Sunshine Coast and the Maroochy River, with towers oriented to capture stunning views of the ocean, river, hinterland, and city. Full-height glazing, deep slab projections, and permeable balustrades maximize natural light, airflow, and shading, ensuring comfortable, energy-efficient living spaces that connect residents to their surroundings.

"By combining timeless design with innovative and sustainable practices, the project is designed to create a development that remains relevant and cherished for generations, setting a new standard for living in Maroochydore.

There were three pre-lodgement meetings with council before the recent application.

At least 4,000 new homes will be delivered in the Maroochydore City Centre Priority Development Area,&nbsp;a 62-hectare site centrally located in Maroochydore. It includes the former Horton Park Golf Course, privately owned land, and a drainage reserve.

Walker Corp unveils Sol by Walker in Maroochydore CBD

The South Australian masterplanned community Riverlea has brought forward development of its retail and homemakers precinct by two years given strong house and land sales.

Stage one of the 80,000 sqm retail centre is now expected to start in early 2022.

Just 35 minutes’ drive from the Adelaide CBD, Riverlea will have over 12,000 homes for 30,000 residents. 

Stage one is on track for completion early September with first residents ready to move in next year.

The $3 billion project is being by Walker Corporation.

Its executive chairman Lang Walker said "Adelaide has fallen in love with his Riverlea vision."

"The speed in which lots are being sold is phenomenal," he said.

“I want Riverlea to be my signature statement and an incredible place which will be revered in South Australia,” Mr Walker said.

Over 240 house and land lots have been sold with hundreds of families on the waitlist for its next releases.

Riverlea offers a long-term solution to the rapid population growth expected in Adelaide’s North West, anticipated to climb by 26,000 over the next decade.

Riverlea will have four retail shopping precincts.
